The Longmont community is invited to participate in the Papermaking process as a way to interact with the layered landscapes and stories of the Front Range. These events will take place in the Artist’s studio (South Gallery) in order to hear directly from members of the community while teaching them each step of the papermaking process. Two methods will be explored: the pulled sheet and the poured sheet. Participants will be using recycled paper and organic elements to pull their own unique sheets of paper, adding paint, natural pigments, and plants as part of the process. Additionally, participants will work together on a large, collaborative sheet of poured paper that will be integrated into Makenzie’s final exhibition at the Firehouse Art Center’s Main Gallery in September.
If willing, participants will be encouraged to share stories, histories, dreams and grievances with one another, both in conversation and in writing. A few prompts will lead the conversation, such as sharing local family histories, experiences within the Longmont community or with wildlife, favorite geological attributes of the Front Range, underrepresented cultural knowledge about the area, etc. These stories will be represented in the final Exhibition, layering aspects of the community into every step of the artist’s residency. Participants can bring additional paper and materials to add to the process, but everything needed will be provided at the event. Come explore the versatile nature of papermaking as a way to connect and build community in Longmont!
