In recognition of Native American Heritage Month and in complement to our “Tipi to Tiny House” exhibit, the Museum is presenting four documentary films over the course of three Sunday afternoons in November. The films will have a special focus on the Northern Arapaho of the Wind River Reservation, whose traditional territory includes what is now Longmont. Each film screening is free and will conclude with an audience Q&A.
This documentary prequel introduces the context for the historic first Sister Cities relationship between a sovereign tribal nation and the City of Longmont, ancestral home of the Northern Arapaho. Filmmakers captured over 16 hours of interviews with members of the Northern Arapaho Tribe and Longmont residents to tell the complex story of heartbreak, friendship, trepidation, and ultimately trust that led to this first-of-its-kind formal relationship. This short introductory video segment focuses on the humor and humility that made this meaningful first step possible, and on the inaugural student exchange program between Northern Arapaho and Longmont youths.
