Metals 102: Power Tools
Please wear appropriate shop attire for this class, no open toed shoes or tennis shoes.
This is a continuation of the Metals 100-101 Class. Certification for the shop can only be granted if you have taken all three of the classes in the series. 100-101, 102 and 103.
METALS 100-101 IS THE PREREQUISITE CLASS
METALS 102: Basic Fabrication and introduction to the powered tools in the shop
DURATION: 2 hours*
INSTRUCTOR: Crystal Hinds
*Members and non members are invited to hone their skills at any of the open studios (first and second Saturday of each month 1-3pm, or schedule some time in-studio with the instructor)
This class is a continuation in the project based certification for the shop.
In this class you will continue to build your sampler project and begin using the powered tools that reside in the shop. We will cover safe practices, proper tool use and light maintenance of the tools. You will use each of the four tools at some point in the process of building your project. The four tools are: Flex shaft, Drill Press, Belt and Disc Sander, and A Bench buffing wheel. There are two other powered tools included in the demonstrations that you are welcome to include in your project but are not required for certification purposes. These are the bench mill and scroll saw for metal.
The instructor will:
• Review acceptable materials and project examples
• Provide additional self-study resources
• Provide instruction on tools, safety and usage
• Supervise hands-on trials and your completion of the Sampler project required for certification

The Attendee will:

*Review safety material, and utilize proper PPE while working in the shop
*Demonstrate safe use of the machines through initial practice and utilizing the equipment in the construction of their project.
*Wear proper attire, shop appropriate clothing is covered in Metals 100-101 and prior to that class through the link.
Note: While this class does have participants create a project utilizing all parts of the shop, it cannot be considered a comprehensive metalsmithing class, there are many things not covered in this project based class. There are other Jewelry and Metal Craft classes intended to teach techniques as well as projects. Watch the calendar, and our website!
Please note, that this certification sequence is only applicable to the tools and settings of the Metalcraft, Jewelry and Lapidary shop.
*Additional time, if needed to complete the project, can be taken at Open Studios on the first and second Saturdays from 1-3pm.
