Botanical art combines object and subject, art and science, and history with horticulture. Botanical subjects are depicted with keen observation, scientific accuracy, and a sophisticated sense of aesthetics. This program begins with relief carvings in Egypt, useful drawings found in early herbals, Renaissance still life paintings, and the innovation of printing that made botanical illustrations more widely available. In recent years, there has been a revival of interest in botanical art. We will look at several contemporary examples that follow the traditional definition while displaying strong composition and a crisp and confident style.

Through the examples in this presentation, you will have an idea of the beauty and breadth of botanical art as a continuing tradition.

The History and Continuing Tradition of Botanical Art traces botanical art from its earliest use on tombs in 500 BC to the modern day. This presentation is developed by the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA), an organization of individuals and institutions who share and interest and appreciation of the tradition and contemporary practice of botanical art.
